Alexa Rose and Carolina Tim are good friends of the American highway. Since November of 2017, they have traveled some 30,000 miles playing music. It seemed like a good thing to do after having met by chance in a North Carolina dive and finding that they shared similar threads in music making: a nostalgia for traditional mountain music, a sense of place in Appalachia, and a belief in human connection through songs.

Rose spent her formative years writing songs in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. You could often find her singing in some small town lagoon, sporting dusty frye boots and a song about traveling. Moving deftly between complex dexterity and heart-tugging familiarity, Rose achieves a sound that pushes gently alongside the bright vocal experimentalism of Joni Mitchell and somberness of Gillian Welch while maintaining the brassy attitude and simple refrains that run straight through American roots music from mountain ballads to rock n roll.

Carolina Tim lives down a holler on the outskirts of Asheville, NC in a log cabin built circa 1890. His musical style emanates the past with a delicate wisdom that seems synchronous with his way of living. A multi-talented instrumentalist who has toured nationally with bluegrass and alternative bands, he lends a uniquely informed ear to a song that seems to transcend genre and lend a methodical yet personal touch. Whether it’s the scratch of an old time fiddle, an inventive guitar styling reminiscent of Dave Rawlings, or a classic bass line, it’s just plain good.

Before the show, you might spot the duo picking wildflowers on the side of the road with their faithful tour dog, Mr. Smiles. Somewhere between the original songs that spout sentimentality and the warm harmonies of a Carter Family tune, listeners will find a window into an upbringing in the regional music and tradition of Appalachia and of the American South.
