An old, rusty bunkhouse. Northern Nebraska in January. Five musicians, no heat, a small PA, big ideas. 3 days later, Bernardus was formed. An idea that had been in the mind of lead singer and songwriter Ben Kramer has finally become a reality. Hailing from Lincoln, Nebraska and blessed with a unique name, Bernardus has all the making of an up and coming prodigious band.
Their ambient folk rock sound, uniquely paired with lead singer Ben Kramer’s singer/songwriter style of lyrics, brings a tone that is best described as Americana through a modern pop lens. Together as a 5 piece, the band recently released their first album; a self titled EP containing 5 songs. The Lincoln Journal Star calls it, “Impressive, from the songs to the performance and the production, establishing Bernardus as one of the best new outfits on the Lincoln scene.”
Loss, love, happiness and purpose are the plurality of themes rooted in Bernardus’ Sleepy Eyed Thoughts. The song … possesses a deep, warmhearted lyricism mirrored by the group’s ability to create a clean, unique string arrangement. Lyrics that say “I’ve been wandering in the dark for the light that you hold, now my sleepy eyed thoughts are clear,” exemplify an emotional turbulence that has reached a climactic, clear-eyed conclusion. In its self-titled debut, Bernardus explores a multitude of harmonies and pairing of string instruments in the Americana vein of Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers.
